APPS + THINGS TO TRY

Tools, practices, and
other things worth trying.

I have a complicated relationship with recommending apps as solutions to human problems. That said, there are some tools, practices, and resources I find myself recommending again and again.

Here are a few of them.

Insight Timer is the self-care app I recommend most often. With a huge library of free guided meditations, music, sleep resources, breathing practices, and more, you can explore without having to commit to any one particular approach.

Sometimes, your nervous system gets “stuck” and responds as if everything is a threat. Neurotoned offers short, guided practices designed to help your overworking system settle and shift gears.

Self-compassion sounds simple. Practicing it can be surprisingly hard. Kristin Neff’s site has a collection of free exercises and guided practices for working with self-criticism, difficult emotions, stress, caregiving, and learning to respond to yourself with a little more kindness. Be sure to check out the Guided Practices and Self-Compassion Exercises.

Sometimes you don’t need another thing to read—you need something to do. This deck includes 75 simple, body-based exercises for exploring nervous system regulation, with practices focused on things like calm, energy, and connection.

I like that you can pull a card and try something without turning nervous system regulation into another project to complete.
